Commission investigates European sugar sector

Recently, the European Commission launched a competition investigation within the European industrial sugar sector. Royal Cosun, and more specifically its business group Suiker Unie, is also involved in this investigation. The investigation covers the period from the sugar campaign of 2011/2012 to today. The European Commission has investigated the offices in Breda and Dinteloord. Cosun is fully cooperating with the investigation and is confident about the outcome.

The Nieuw Prinsenland Sustainability Report for 2011 provides an open insight into the development of the Nieuw Prinsenland Agro & Food Cluster arising next to Suiker Unie's sugar factory in Dinteloord (West Brabant, the Netherlands). A sustainable production location is being created for businesses operating in or associated with the agro and food industry. The ambition is to facilitate profitable symbiosis and cooperation between businesses, not only in environmental areas but also in social and economic areas.

Sugar beet are full of useful components: sugar and fibre for animal feed (pulp) are the best known. But there are also many other components that can be used in very specific applications. Beet residues can be converted into fatty acids, for example, that can in turn be processed into fully biodegradable bioplastics. We have the know-how, we just need the large-scale production facilities to put it into practice. To this end, Suiker Unie is working with other companies in Groningen in the innovative BioTRIP programme.

The first Suiker Unie green gas station was opened at the Dinteloord site on Tuesday afternoon, 29 May 2012. Suiker Unie has won the Lean & Green Award. The Award is presented to businesses that have set themselves the goal of reducing their CO2 emissions by at least 20% over the next five years. Suiker Unie intends to reduce the emissions from its bulk transport of sugar by 30% by 2014.

Cosun has published its Sustainability Report 2011 in digital PDF and HTML formats at www.annualreport-cosun.com. The report outlines Cosun's ambitions, activities and results in the fields of profit, planet & people. The two largest business groups, Aviko and Suiker Unie, will publish their own sustainability reports on their websites in June.
